DFL Convention Day: Winning the Room

May 2, 2017

This Saturday our supporters, decked out in our signature bright blue, gathered at the Ward 11 DFL Convention to push forward our campaign for a more progressive City Council.  We worked hard to prepare for this day -- the biggest one yet for Team Schroeder. Our supporters turned out in a big way -- the convention ended without an endorsement (a key victory over the incumbent) and with our campaign commanding the most votes.

For nearly seven hours, we advocated for the progressive change that guides this campaign. We made sure the process was fair and inclusive. And we couldn't have done it without tremendous support from the community. From our 13 precinct captains to the amazing friends of campaign who kept everyone hydrated and energized, and of course the Team Schroeder delegates themselves, we all achieved this together.

A series of delegate votes got us here. We rallied around the core values of this campaign: that our city government can work better, for all people, in an inclusive and dynamic way. We blocked an attempt by others to shut down the convention before delegates had a chance to be adequately heard.

After the third and final ballot, we had won the support of the room. Though no single candidate cleared the 60 percent threshold for securing the Ward 11 DFL endorsement, we scored the most delegate votes overall.

This is a resounding endorsement of our message that Minneapolis can do better -- in how it addresses constituent concerns, in how it approaches housing policy, in how it treats working families. Thanks to the Ward 11 delegates who threw their weight behind those priorities, with an eye toward a brighter and more vibrant future for Ward 11!

By the time Washburn High School cleared out after the convention on Saturday, Team Schroeder was tired. Our feet ached, and our stock of T-shirts and bagels had dwindled to nothing.  But even after seven hours working hard alongside our neighbors to advocate for our values, we were jubilant. We heard Ward 11 delegates loud and clear. Their support for this campaign spoke volumes about the progressive vision they want for the community.

This weekend marked a huge victory for our campaign. We are energized and excited to continue onto November, and we invite you to join us!
